How hard is DipFA?
Updated 23 September 2026
DipFA is harder than CeMAP in scope, not because the first module is a different exam. FSRE is FRE1 and FRE2 — the same papers. The jump is the Applied Financial Advice modules: tax, investment, protection and retirement, each two 45-minute papers at 70%, plus a coursework module the MCQs will not save you from.
The pass mark does the damage
Every MCQ unit is 70%. On an AFA paper that is 21/30. Miss a case study of five linked questions and you have already given up a sixth of the paper. People who are “pretty good” at the syllabus still fail because they practise untimed, or they only sit quizzes that never force a full 45 minutes.
What makes AFA papers feel unlike FSRE
- They are shorter and denser: 30 marks, 45 minutes, two case studies.
- Tax and pension figures must be the current tax year. Vintage notes with an 8.75% dividend rate or a lifetime allowance will train the wrong reflex.
- Case-study questions are linked. One misread client fact can cost a run of marks.
- You cannot average a strong AFAT with a weak AFAR. Each unit is its own exam.
A practical standard before you book
If you cannot clear 70% on a harder timed mock in that unit, you are not exam-ready, even if you once scored 80% on an untimed quiz. Sit FRE1 Paper 1 free if you still need FSRE. For the AFA modules, use a full 45-minute paper rather than a five-question taster as your last check.
